WEEK 2: Getting it Right with People

Some many of us want people around us to change their behaviours and attitudes in dealing with us. Often times, we are frustrated by their worsening mannerisms and their presence steals our own peace away. Well, maybe you can’t change anyone but you can determine how people around you affect you inner peace.

The foundation of a beneficial relationship is acceptance and that goes without you pretending everyone is an angel. People are more likely to stay with you when they realize their personalities are safe with you, without you pressured to crush them at the slightest provocation from them. Most times when we admit others into our circle, we do so in our own terms. The toughest field of discrimination is right in our hearts. We write people off before we give them chance to prove they are worthy of our trust and friendship. Ironically, the way to improve yourself is to improve others. To improve others, you must deal with them in the light of their uniqueness.

Not even you want to change before being admitted into other people’s circles. So, why make such demand on others. Jesus illustrated this lesson vividly with The Good Samaritan parable. Through his ministry, we find all sorts of people in his circle. Remember, the sinful Peter, the Gentile Woman, the Roman Captain, the Samaritan Woman, Zaccheus the extortioner, the sanctimonious Nichodemus, and Geneserenean Mad Man, the list goes on and on. He admitted all of these people into his circle without making any demand on them.

  • Opening the room for other people’s peculiarities paves a way for us to add various colours to ours and that takes care of boredom largely.
  • Admitting people into our spheres, focusing on their peculiarities, switches on the knowledge portal to us. This is the route to an increasing quality of life.
  • Acclimatizing to other people’s environment makes you less of a conflict-person and more of a peace-person.

Having considered the points here, they are not suggesting that keeping personal principles in relationship is undesirable, as a matter of fact it advocates it; however, there is a great need to learn the value of opening up your world for people to learn from it and vice versa.
The fact is people are like climatic conditions, you don’t expect weathers to change for you, and you acclimatize to them. Otherwise, you would be denying yourself a well of peace.

REFLECTION POINT:

Relationship is underlined by an inside-out approach. Do not put personality ahead of character. It is less practical to want to improve other before improving ourselves.

TASK:

Think about one person you have closed the door of friendship to and reopen it. Think about what you need to do differently to make the fellow fit into your world.

Quote of the Week:
To help people improve, you must see them in the light of their own uniqueness.

WEEKLY POST: Racing for the Tape

Sometimes our richest times are right in the midst if our hardest. Transformation is tough. We don’t often end up the persons we think we will, but God has filled our lives with two great gifts: purpose and passion. We need to find what these are and have them drive us through the rocky paths. Life is not ever about starting and finishing. It is about beginning and ending a complete transformed man from who started it. No man has ever thought of life as a place to get to and felt fulfilled getting there. A fulfilled life knows the wealth of life lies below the punches that often pretend to make life not worth living. But purpose puts us on a track we are pleased running on except you have not found it. And passion gives us the energy to keep running through the frost until the time is up. By this time, you are already leading other people, who were afraid to step into their tracks, to gain fulfilment from the total life of dissatisfaction.

Pastor E.A Adeboye postulates the law of transformation as, whatever you admire is what you will likely become. Men like Adeboye understand life as a journey to a transformation driven by purpose. They understand purpose, admire each of it God has given them, and are transformed into it. For them, life is not a journey of start and finish. It is one of starting and finishing the right man. The best part of the journey is that God has left you space to change the world. So you know He really wants you to be the hero too.

REFLECTION POINT:
Everyone who participates in a race starts as an athlete. Some get to the tape as athletes and some get there as champions- that is transformation.

TASK:
Take half an hour or a quarter and think about what changes you require to achieve the kind of transformation you desire. Note the step to the changes and start taking them. If you are having difficulty adhering to the steps, ask an intimate friend or kin, who is interested in your personal development to help you monitor your progress.

Quote of the week:
Life is a journey. Not so much to a destination but a transformation.

LITTLE LITTLE LITTLE STAR

The beginning of great achievements is faith.
You must believe in the value of your pursuit because people will only drift into your circle only when they realize how much trust you have in your vision. There no such thing as an insignificant effort as long as the path is right. While opportunities for great achievements may come once in a life time, opportunities for small achievements are daily occurrence. As a youth, your obligation is to be committed to noble contributions to your environment. And it does not matter if your contributions make a lot of difference or not. What counts is the feeling of blessedness and the inner bliss that make you feel like a hero.

A Finnish proverb says, “Even a small star shines in the darkness.” No act of heroics is too little. Every little goal we set and achieve wins us impetus to go for the higher stakes. The author of the bestselling book, The Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren, opines that mostly as man, we are often challenged to do great things for God. However, the truth is He finds the small things we do out of loving obedience more pleasing. The same position is true about your dream. It is going to be realized by recognizing unlikely opportunities, little efforts, and diminutive success. Thinking of it, a little star is as large as the earth. Isn’t it? So, every good we do as individuals counts finally. Never belittle your achievements; they become the constellation that is celebrated as the cynosure of all eyes.

REFLECTION: Remember, rain comes in droplets and forms a flood. Start contributing your little droplets of effort until you have a flood of achievements.

TASK: Make a list of easy-to-do valuable actions that you often neglect and make a commitment to start doing them.

Quote of the Day:
We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean could be less because of that missing drop.

STEP BY STEP

The reason a lot of people do not have success stories is not because they are failures but as a result of their inabilities to translate their ideas and dreams into a realizable entity. This involves doing something about them.

Action is the life substance of faith. The only reason we still recognize faith as an element of creation in our sphere of the universe is because there are men and women who make moves.
I am a BULLET in the Chamber... I'll JUST DO IT!

These people do not just talk about what they want to achieve or what they believe is possible to them, they concretize their beliefs and engineer them to go around. They do the little little actions that talkers consider insignificant and gradually advance towards the vision of what they see. As you remember, the bible says; Faith without works is dead... (James 2:24, KJV).

Opportunities to give lives to our ideas mostly cross our ways everyday in forms of trivial actions or occasions. Every opportunity seized is a movement towards realizing your dreams. No one, who waits to view a clear road before a journey, ever embarks on it.
Take your first step
Driving teaches us that the way to getting to your destination is to take every mile per hour. One of the greatest characters a young man or woman must have is the ability to start his or her dream from where he or she is, because waiting is a close kin of Goddot.

REFLECTION POINT:
What actions can I make at the point where I am that will take me closer to my dreams?
TASK:
Draw a big circle on a card or paper, leave some space and draw a second circle. In the first circle write a description of where you are presently and a description of where you want to be in future in the second. Use the space between the two circles to list the actions, which you have not given attention, that have the potentials to drive you towards the second circle from the first. Tick each action as you begin to carry it out successfully.

Quote of the Day:
To take the first step in faith you don’t have to see the whole staircase just take the first step.                                                    -Dr. Martin Luther king Jr.

It All Starts Here...

You are probably aware of the rate of suicide around the world today? Have you ever wondered why people take their own lives? Reports on some suicide cases across the world borders show that the following are among the reasons for this tragic act: frustration, heartbreak, threat, pain, poverty, protest etc. Now, each time you hear or read about suicide incidents, do you blame the victims for what they have done or empathize with them? The truth is no one is justified well enough to take his own life. The most tragic fact about suicide is that people between the 18-40 demography suffer the tragedy most.

The emerging truth about suicide victims or those who subject themselves to below-human life as a result of the aforementioned reasons have one thing in common; they all lost faith in their lives. Any man who must live above the vicissitudes of life must be on the purpose-driven lane. Purpose gives us vision, passion, energy, hope, perseverance and faith for life.
Your life never starts at birth, it starts when you discover a reason to live for, whose drive and passion overwhelm the force of any unpleasant circumstance that pushes towards giving up on life. No matter how complicated you find life, you must convince yourself that there is an ultimate ground for you, which hands you a right to life. If you have come through sicknesses, accidents, epidemics, and many other circumstances that could have ended your life, it only implies that you are an asset to this world. Remember, if you faint in the days of adversity your strength is weak.

REFLECTION POINT:
Purpose is the mission that makes life worth living. Does what you do now or where you are now give you the feeling of worthiness? If no, there are chances you are not living out your purpose or you have not discovered it.
TASK:
Spend some time today thinking to find out those things you do or want to do that leave you with a feeling of worthiness. These may be pointers to your destination.

Quote of the Day:

One of the major discoveries you can make in life is the discovery of self. Nothing can replace it.                    -

THE S-CHOICE

Never say you can’t. If you believe you can’t then you won’t. If you believe you can then you will.

Success doesn’t happen by chance, it is the product (result) of our beliefs, decisions, and actions all together. All these are by-products of daily choices we make. Our convictions push us to the cliff edge of success, our decisions and actions do the rest- they push into the success deep.

I CHOOSE TO BE A SUCCESS!
Quote:
Success is neither magical nor mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying the basic fundamentals.       -Jim Rohn
